Previously released by Image Entertainment and reviewed HERE, Mario Bava's partial precursor to Bay of Blood was given an improved transfer by Anchor Bay / Starz Home Entertainment in 2007, featuring an anamorphic transfer with somewhat less grain, less aggressive compression, richer colours, and vastly improved sound mixes. (The Image disc used a PAL to NTSC transfer which shortened the running time to 78 mins., had a grainy & hissy English dub track, and the Italian mix was a bit coarse in spots.)
The trade-off for an improved transfer are no extras, as the Image DVD included a stills gallery, isolated music and effects track, and 5 versions of the film theme playing over select menus (although a snippet of the film's main titles plays over the main menu on the Anchor Bay disc).
Five Dolls for an August Moon is available as part of the Mario Bava Collection Vol. 2 from Anchor Bay/Starz Home Entertainment, which includes Bay of Blood / Reazione a catena, Baron Blood / Gli Orrori del castello di Norimberga, Five Dolls for an August Moon / 5 bambole per la luna d'agosto, Four Times That Night / Quante volte... quella notte, Kidnapped + Rabid Dogs / Cani arrabbiati, Lisa and the Devil + The House of Exorcism / La Casa dell'esorcismo, and Roy Colt and Winchester Jack / Roy Colt e Winchester Jack.
